| Permission | Description |
|---|---|
| Approve Engagement (only applies if Review/Approve is enabled) | It's the required permission while an engagement sits in Pending Approval: an assignee with it sees the Update Status panel and can move the engagement forward (or back). Also makes a staff member eligible to be assigned the Approver role. |
| Cancel Engagement | Shows the "Cancel…" row action (hidden if archived or already canceled) and enables the Canceled option in the workflow status selector, single and batch. |
| Change Engagement Role (only applies if Review/Approve is enabled) | Lets the user reassign the Drafter / Reviewer / Approver / Sender assignees in the engagement detail drawer. Roles become read-only once the engagement is completed regardless. |
| Create Engagement | Shows "New Engagement…" and "Batch Create" on the Engagements page and the new-engagement option on Client and Client Group pages. Note: most engagement-page edit controls use an Edit-or-Create check, so Create alone also unlocks those (see Edit). |
| Delete Engagement | Shows the "Delete…" row action and the bulk "Delete…" action. |
| Draft Engagement | Does not control creating drafts (that's Create). It's the required permission while an engagement is in Draft or Under Revision: without it an assignee can't open the Update Status panel to move it to Pending Review. Also makes a staff member eligible for the Drafter role. Reverting to Draft is gated by the current step's permission, not this one. |
| Edit Engagement | Edit-only: row actions "Execute manually…", "Renew…", "Restore…", "Archive…" (Archive blocked when Sent) and bulk "Renew…". Edit-or-Create: Renew button, adding clients, scope-of-services changes, letter-tab edit/upload, Documents tab, detail-field action buttons, "Send to Client" / "Execute manually" in the status message, batch-page Renew. |
| Edit Customized Document | Allows a user to customize a letter, including flattening any block—even when the block is locked. To prevent a user from editing a letter or flattening content within a locked or unlocked block, remove this permission. |
| Edit Engagement Renewal Notification Settings | Shows the "Engagement Letter Notifications" toggle in Settings › Engagement Settings and allows saving it. Satisfies that route's guard, but is not part of the top-level Settings guard, so a user with only this permission likely can't reach the page. |
| Edit Engagements Settings | Shows and allows saving the "Manual Engagement Requirements", "Signatory Reassignment" (feature-flagged), "Engagement Staffing" and "Post-Execution Scope Changes" toggles. Also grants access to the /settings route, header tab and side navigation. |
| Manage Engagement Letter Section Templates | Opens Settings › Engagement Templates; shows the "Section Templates" tab and the add buttons for section templates/sections. In the section-template dialog, unlocks Override/Update/Save-as-new, name and section-type fields, and the "Block edits" lock (without it, Override only). In an engagement's letter, allows changing a locked section's template and editing sections that don't allow custom content. Counts toward Settings access. |
| Manage Engagement Letter Templates | Opens Settings › Engagement Templates; shows the "Letter Templates" and "Section Types" tabs and allows adding a letter template. Enables the "Edit letter template" button inside an engagement's letter form (feature-flagged). Counts toward Settings access. |
| Manage Job Templates | Opens Settings › Project Management › "Project Templates" (also requires engagements + project-management config on and the updated-settings-layout flag). Creating, editing and duplicating templates there use separate Project Management permissions. Counts toward Settings access. |
| Reopen Engagement | Shows the "Reopen…" row action, which only appears for Canceled engagements. V2-only permission — with V2 enforcement off, Reopen is always disabled. No bulk Reopen exists. |
| Review Engagement | No dedicated button. Required permission while an engagement is in Pending Review: lets an assignee open the Update Status panel and move it on (to Approval / Ready to Send / back to Draft). Also makes a staff member eligible for the Reviewer role. |
| Send Engagement | Row and bulk "Send to Client…" (Draft/Under Revision with no errors) and "Resend…"; per-contact "Resend…" on the Contacts tab; the Sent option in the status selector; the required permission while in Ready to Send. The detail-page "Send to Client" button needs Send and Edit-or-Create. Makes a staff member eligible for the Sender role. |
| View Engagement | Only use: shows the comments panel in the engagement letter editor. It does not gate the Engagements list or route. |
| View Module | Route guard on /engagements and on client / client-group engagement sub-routes; shows the "Engagements" sidenav link, the Engagements tab on Client and Client Group pages, and the engagements column/row menu item in the clients table. |
For the Review/Approve permissions, the Update Status panel also requires the user to be an assignee on the engagement in some role.
The one boundary the source is clear about
An engagement user can change the wording on the letter in front of them. Only a user with engagement template permissions can push that change back into the section template, or create a new template from it. Everyone else sees those two options greyed out.
This is the line between adapting a letter and changing firm policy.
On a dynamic letter template the same line runs between Flatten and Edit. A user with the Edit Customized Document permission can flatten any block—even a locked block—into flat text on one letter. To prevent a user from editing a letter, including flattening content within a locked or unlocked block, remove that permission. Edit changes the block itself, the editor warns how many engagements share it, and it appears only for users with template permissions.
